My Own URL Shortener

Well, it seems that it has been quite sometime since I last posted an update. The most recent thing that I have done is that I now have my own url shortener. I am using YOURLS, which after a few little hiccups in the install, seems to be working just fine. The problems that I had were that the installation instructions on their website, and the instructions in the downloaded file did not quite match. So I used the wrong one (of course), thus missing a crucial step. Once they pointed out that I did not follow a step, and I pointed out that one of their instructions lists was wrong, I took the correct action and my database was setup. Then I just needed to figure out what I needed in my .htaccess file to make everything work on my hosting service. Once all of that was done, everything is working fine. Of course the last thing to test is the wordpress plugin, which this post will help to test.

Let’s see, what else is going on. Well, as you might recall from a couple of posts ago, I was struggling with getting registered to take a class on photography from my local community college. Well, that class is underway, and I have been learning a few things so far. After I do some redesigning, that information will be available on my photography blog (Go Shoot With Digital).

I upgraded my Mac to 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and lost access to my NAS drive. Apple has been slow to respond to this issue, and there appear to be a large number of people affected by this, based on the entries in the Apple support forums as well as NAS system providers. My USB disk that contained my iTunes library seems to have crashed, so I am looking to replace that. I would prefer sooner rather than later, but to do that I may need to take an intermediate step since what I think I may want to end up with is a Drobo system.

I am considering upgrading my Windows Vista system to the New Windows 7, as long as I can still get in on the special student edition pricing. It seems like it is a good OS release from Microsoft, at least that is what is being said by sources that I trust.

I guess that is about all for now. Hopefully, it won’t be 2 months before I give my next update.

Keeping busy, and doing ridiculous things

Well, the holidays are just around the corner. *insert sounds of jingle bells* My parents are off on a cruise, and will be back in time for Christmas. My Christmas shopping is almost done, just one more item to order and a couple of things to pick up for the gift exchange at work. It has been amazing how much Christmas shopping I have done for myself this year. Of course part of that problem is because my parents got me an iPhone for Christmas. Yes we got it early, because they were worried that they might be in short supply as we got closer to Christmas. So of course I was buying accessories for the phone as well.

Unfortunately, the economy has hit us fairly hard at work, so there has not been any overtime available this year. And, it would appear that there is little hope of having money in the budget for raises next year. Of course that means that I need to start finding other ways to make that extra cash. If I could find any paying clients for my web design services, that would help. And, if I could find time to plan out some photo shoots that could be used on stock photo sites like iStock, Big Stock, or Dreamstime. And of course there is always the lottery.

Yet, in the midst of all of these other things going on, and concerns for the future, I still have to fight with websites being stupid. I have had a long battle going on with Facebook over an application that does not seem to want to let go of me. I have uninstalled the application from my Facebook profile, but I keep getting these notifications that players of this game have used my account to do something. This has been reported twice to Facebook, and once the application developer was copied on that complaint. Now, I have registered my complaint with Truste, the company that says Facebook has a good privacy policy and that they enforce it. We will see if that has any effect.

I Saw A Double Rainbow Today

Today, like many days recently, we got a bunch of rain. As I was driving home from work, I saw a fairly vibrant rainbow. Looking closer, there was a second rainbow, much fainter, just to the left (or north) of the main rainbow. So, of course I had to take the time to take a picture of it.

What to expect next

Well, while I was sleeping last night the power went out again. So I trundled off to work, and when I returned, power had been restored (again). So we shall see what happens tonight. At least Fay has moved out of my area so I am not getting much in the way of rain or high winds now.

Now, on to the good news. It looks like everything is still a go for the Worldwide Photowalk. The major organizer (Scott Kelby) talks about it on his blog. I guess while I have power, I better make sure to put my camera battery on charge. So, I’ll see y’all later.
